One Program. Different Starting Points.

The right preparation depends on the host’s income record, family-size calculation, the applicant’s own income and the intended length of the visit.

Standard Super Visa

A parent or grandparent applies from outside Canada with an eligible host, qualifying insurance, a medical exam and a complete visitor record.

Two-Year Income Route

The host and eligible co-signer may meet the full minimum income in either of the two taxation years before the application.

Combined-Income Route

If the host side reaches at least 75% of the required amount for the previous year, qualifying applicant income may cover the balance.

Shorter Family Visit

If the planned stay is six months or less, a regular visitor visa may be the more appropriate route.

New income rules apply from March 31, 2026.Applications in process on that date and applications submitted afterward are assessed under the updated income methods.

Host and applicant requirements

Confirm Both Sides First.

A strong application must satisfy the Super Visa rules and the ordinary requirements for temporary entry to Canada.

HOST

Who May Invite

The host must be the applicant’s biological or adopted child or grandchild, be at least 18, live in Canada and hold qualifying Canadian status.

  • Relationship documented
  • Status and residence proven
  • Signed invitation prepared
INCOME

Meet The Current Method

Calculate family size first, then test the host and permitted co-signer against the current minimum income and documentary options.

  • Every required person counted
  • Correct tax years used
  • Income evidence reconciled
INSURANCE

Use A Qualifying Policy

The policy must be valid for at least one year from entry, provide at least $100,000 emergency coverage and satisfy IRCC’s insurer and payment rules.

  • Health care and hospitalization
  • Repatriation included
  • Paid policy, not a quote
APPLICANT

Remain A Genuine Visitor

The applicant must apply from outside Canada, be admissible, complete the medical exam and satisfy the officer they will leave after the authorized stay.

  • Purpose of visit explained
  • Home-country ties documented
  • Finances and history consistent

Super Visa Or Another Route?

The best option depends on visit length, permanent-residence goals, current location and whether the family can satisfy the host-income and insurance rules.

SUPER VISA

Extended Temporary Visits

Designed for eligible parents and grandparents who want longer visits and can satisfy host-income, insurance, medical and visitor requirements.

VISITOR VISA

Shorter Visits

Usually the better fit when the intended stay is six months or less or when Super Visa-specific requirements cannot be met.

PGP

Permanent Residence

Parents and grandparents sponsorship is a separate invitation-based permanent-residence program with different income and undertaking rules.

IN-CANADA STATUS

Extension Planning

A person already in Canada may need a visitor-record strategy. A new Super Visa application itself must be made from outside Canada.

Insurance is an ongoing obligation

Coverage Must Remain Real.

A quote is not enough. The policy must meet IRCC’s insurer, duration, payment and coverage conditions, and valid proof should be carried on each entry to Canada.

Check the policy carefully
  • At least one year of validity from the date of entry.
  • At least $100,000 for emergency coverage.
  • Health care, hospitalization and repatriation included.
